Unless a British comedian has been on Taskmaster, I probably don’t know who they are. Such is the case with Kate Smurthwaite, a self-titled feminist and comedian who appeared on journalist Dan Wootton’s show to debate so-called “mansplaining” and “manspreading” with Kellie-Jay Keen (yet another Brit/Britain-based TV personality I’ve never heard of despite being married to a UK native and living in the British Isles for a year and a half so far).
Only a debate isn’t exactly what happened. See for yourself:
I would never think of censoring my guests, certainly not during The Clash debate.

But that’s exactly what feminist comedian Kate Smurthwaite expected during a debate with Kellie-Jay Keen last night.
Another example of the ‘Be Kind’ hard-left in action…pic.twitter.com/qXx0ZebcmL
In the clip, which begins with Wootton confirming that Smurthwaite hasn’t yet stormed off (implying that that’s something she often does), the “comedian” goes off on a tirade about trans rights and women’s rights and frankly I’m not sure what else because the droning all runs together after about 2.8 seconds, until Keen says LITERALLY ONE WORD and this wench goes, “I haven’t finished, Kelley, and I will SPEAK UNTIL I HAVE.” (I’m 90% sure some spittle landed on her camera screen on that “speak,” by the way.)
After Smurthwaite again bristles at the other person in the debate (you know, the exchange of arguments and ideas between two people) daring to open her mouth and informing Wootton that he “will let her finish,” the host finally finds his balls and reminds her that it is, after all, his show, and furthermore a DEBATE. Between TWO PEOPLE.
After she continues rant and rave, the showrunners turn down her volume so that viewers can listen to literally anything but her harpy-like droning; when they turn her back on, she is literally repeating, word for word, the same goofy mantras she probably chants in her mirror every morning. When Wootton reminds her that it is a TWO-WAY DISCUSSION, Smurthwaite basically says, “no the f*ck it isn’t,” continues screeching, and then hangs up.
It is an utterly gripping three-minute clip, and I have more thoughts about it than I thought possible to have about such a short video.
First of all, I can’t help but comment on Keen’s overall presentation versus Smurthwaite’s. I don’t want to be that gal who points out that radical leftists are almost always uglier and less professional than their more reasonable counterparts, but, I mean, come on.
Secondly, unless Smurthwaite’s approach to comedy is utterly meta, and she endeavors to make us laugh by method-acting as the quintessential progressive seahag, I’m going to decisively say that her only claim to the epithet “funny” is her goofy AF last name.
And lest any of us feel tempted to give Smurthwaite the benefit of the doubt that maybe she was just having an off day, I direct your attention to this incredible video that a Twitter user shared in the replies to Wootton’s original tweet.
Absolutely glorious.

The second video- just…what? How can someone be so oblivious?
Hence why I have to allow room for the possibility that she is meta-trolling all of us. lol
I have noted for years that liberal progressives cannot debate. they think debate is emotional screaming and that they are so smart that everyone should agree with them. Conservatives listen politely waiting for them to make their point. When the conservative attempts to speak with factual information the liberal shouts them down. Liberals cannot think at all. They are a bundle of 100% emotion. They have no facts that support the screaming, only the way they feel. I have heard many times when a liberal is asked a question, the answer starts with “I felt that”.
I just had a “debate” with a few people (liberal? I would guess yes.) over on Patreon (Popcorn in Bed’s page) about what is racism. I said –
“I’ll just point out racism is not liking/judging someone *because of* their race. Walt [Gran Torino] didn’t differentiate by race at all, he hated (or at least used crude language about) everyone, including his own family. ”
-I got a bunch of replies saying that racism is being offensive, power structures, etc. The usual talking points. I was called a racist because I said offensive doesn’t equal racist, told I didn’t know what racism is, blah, blah, blah. In all their ramblings about what racism really is, do you know what they never mentioned is part of racism? “Race” (and/or intent). How do you have a “debate” with someone about racism if they think “race” isn’t the base of it, only the emotion of being offended?
A big problem when dealing with the modern Left is that they don’t speak the same language we do. All the words look familiar but they map to completely different and usually nonsensical definitions. The only thing they maintain is their relation to good and bad.
I think you’re right– even if they aren’t incoherent and unhinged about it (and I really think most Americans from either side of the spectrum are overall decent enough people), a majority of liberals just don’t operate in the realm of facts.
Case in point, I recently had an exchange (admittedly over social media) about gun laws with a friend I’ve known since middle school & for whom I have the greatest love and respect… She made her points, which were articulate and well thought out, as I would expect, and I responded with arguments and facts for which I provided sources and links. Her response didn’t argue the veracity of any of my claims, but basically boiled down to “I just feel like.” And I just. . . couldn’t respond. The facts of life didn’t change how she felt, and that was the crux of her argument, so there was really nothing left for me to say.
I still adore her and will forever treasure her as a person & her friendship, and I’ll always be open to exchanging points of view with her, but to your point, it’s hard to have a proper debate when a person’s entire opinion boils down to what they “feel like” should be the case. (I also feel like it would be better if no kids got shot at school, but that’s just not the world we’re in, is it?)
Maybe they can give her Samantha Bee’s time slot? She isn’t as funny, but her angry white woman routine will go over well here in the US for awhile at least.
“as funny” implies Samantha Bee is remotely funny…. lol
