While the eviction moratorium is enabling tenants to not pay their rent dues to landlord Buddy Shoup in North Carolina, Shoup is out $24,000 in unpaid rent while his tenants purchase boats.
The new ban that encompasses the eviction moratorium is expected to last until October 3rd, which was announced by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Shoup owns 35 properties around the state of North Carolina and is expected, by law, to maintain those properties with the minimal rental assistance from the federal government.
Fox News reported:
Buddy Shoup, who owns 35 properties across the state, said that he has been forced to maintain the properties and hemorrhage costs while the federal government slowly dribbles out rental assistance, of which only 7% has been doled out to renters in need.
“[The money] was used, they went and bought brand new boats, but I mean, you know in a time of crisis like what we’ve been through, you’re evidently getting money from somewhere, but it’s not getting to me,” said Shoup.
Oh, and those tenants that bought boats? Their air-conditioning failed over the summer. Guess who they called for repairs? Yup, their landlord.
This is a prime example of the dangers of these assistance programs.
Hell, even the civil courts are already being overloaded. Once garnishment requests flood in when renters are being required to pay back the rent they missed, I’m afraid it’ll be gone to the wind.
Shoup was legally required to make the $4,500 repair on the residence but said he did not receive any money from the tenants or the government to cover the additional cost.
“It goes way beyond the loss of rental income, we’re still bound by county rules and laws,” added Shoup. “We have to maintain the property.”
Shoup says that he has yet to see any evidence that the relief funds are even reaching struggling renters.
Tuesday, the administration announced a new targeted eviction ban to replace the one that expired on Saturday. The president said he spoke with constitutional scholars and even conceded that “the bulk of the constitutional scholars say it’s not likely to pass constitutional muster.”
Just send everyone back to work and stop enabling everyone to be lazy! However, I don’t doubt that this is part of their socialist goal.
