Trump Says Coronavirus Model Overestimated Number Of Hospital Beds Needed

I’m just going to say it.  I’M DONE WITH DESTROYING OUR ECONONMY BASED ON MODELS!!!

President Donald Trump said Sunday that the coronavirus model the White House has been using overestimated the number of beds that would be needed to treat patients.

The president admitted that the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) model his administration was using has been off on the number of hospital beds needed, but did not say whether he would be open to changing the type of models he’s been using.

“It’s turning out that we need less hospital beds,” Trump said at the coronavirus task force’s daily press briefing. “We may have models, but we’ve been sort of saying that. In New York, we were saying we think you’re gonna need less.”

Apparently, the model is not off just a little.  The models are off significantly.

The model projected that New York would need 65,400 hospital beds by April 4, but only 15,905 were actually used, according to former New York Times reporter Alex Berenson.

Look, isn’t the whole point of the shutdown to make sure the hospitals are not overwhelmed?  The point is not to lessen the total number of deaths.  The point is to make sure no one dies due to the hospitals being overwhelmed and therefore unable to treat.

If these models are all wrong, and we are needing far less beds than projected, then we need to stop this economic suicide.  Millions and millions are losing their jobs.  Businesses are shuttered (some permanently).  The millions and millions are actually unemployed.  This is not a projection or model of future unemployment.  This is here and now.

Enough.

We need a better plan than includes opening the economy while still practicing excellent hygiene and social distancing.
