Disney Pixar To Release Movie Featuring First LGBTQ Animated Character

While Disney has several other movies that depict characters to be of the LGBTQ community, this is the first Disney Pixar animated film to include one.

According to Fox News:

Disney’s “Onward” is set to feature an openly LGBTQ animated character to be voiced by actress Lena Waithe.

The character, a purple cyclops, will be a police officer who references her girlfriend when she pulls over a driver that was distracted by his girlfriend’s kids, according to Slate.

“Onward” stars Tom Holland and Chris Pratt as brothers who embark on a quest to magically resurrect their father for a day.

I suppose this is the first explicitly open portrayal of a character’s sexuality ever displayed in these films, as opposed to the implications of LeFou being gay in “Beauty and the Beast” or the same-sex kiss between two of the soldiers in the recent Star War film “The Rise of Skywalker.”

Apparently the ‘super explicit and all inclusive’ representation for the LGBTQ community in this film is a one-line statement about how the female cop’s girlfriend’s daughter has her ‘pulling her hair out.’

Wow. Way to fully embrace the lesbianism and make a huge deal about a throwaway line.

Slate reported:

That line isn’t the point of the scene. In fact, it goes by so fast you could barely notice it. But that’s why it works so well. The film doesn’t pause to let it sink in or isolate the moment with a cut for emphasis. It passes unremarked, because in this world, it’s accepted as a fact of life. Some babies have two daddies, and some babies have two mommies, even if those mommies happen to be centaurs or elves.

This effort to show open lesbianism is definitely very vanilla compared to the other exclusive efforts to showcase sexuality in Disney films.

Just to be clear, I’m fine with that.

What I’m baffled by is – is there really underrepresentation these days?

You don’t see straight people sucking face just to show that they’re heterosexual. You don’t have to pee on your partner to claim your sexuality in front of everyone.

Either way, I know the LGBTQ community deals with a lot of scrutiny, and I just wish them godspeed with that.
