Governor Rod Blagojevich is now a free man thanks to President Donald J. Trump. He was released from prison yesterday and promptly proclaimed himself a “Trumpocrat”.
Blago expressed how he was feeling as he left prison, saying,
I want to express my deepest, most profound, and everlasting gratitude to President Trump. He didn’t have to do this. He’s a Republican president. I was Democratic governor. My fellow Democrats have not been very kind to him. In fact, they’ve been very unkind to him. And what he did, was I think, something that deserves a great amount of appreciation on my part, personally, and he has from me, my deepest, most profound, and everlasting gratitude. I can’t wait to get home. I miss my daughters. I miss my wife. I miss home. He’s got, obviously, a big fan in me. And if you’re asking me what my party affiliation is, I’m a Trumpocrat.
Blago went on to lament the current state of the criminal justice system and abuse of power that exists.
He criticized lengthy sentences that are given and said he has witnessed how the system is racist. He said it is not fair-minded and, in particular, pointed to the long sentences given for nonviolent drug offenses.
Many are not happy that a “corrupt politician” has been granted this commutation. I get that. I’m a recent Hoosier, transplanted from Illinois where I was born and raised.
I’m an Illinoisan at heart, and always will be. I lived under Rod’s governorship and I think President Trump acted justly yesterday.
I NEVER voted for Blago and completely disagreed with his policies. However, he was railroaded and, in my opinion, targeted for personal reasons.
He always came off as a cocky, arrogant S.O.B. and obviously ticked off the wrong people. His sentence was far too harsh. We have child molesters serving far less time than him, which is insane.
If you want to hear more from Blago, he will be giving a press conference today at 11:00 am (CST).
