The Gateway Pundit has interviewed Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) and Paul is setting off warning alarms to the Senate GOP. Senator Paul has been and continues to be a strong defender of President Trump in this whole impeachment process.
Senator Paul’s big issue is witnesses. House Democrats delayed sending the Articles of Impeachment over the whole issue of witnesses and the details of how the trial would be held.
Paul said,
My goal in this is to be done with the impeachment as soon as possible, and probably the best way to do that is actually no witnesses — but, if we’re going to have witnesses we should have witnesses from both sides.
Paul is 100% correct. The House impeachment inquiry was so unfair and so lopsided. The same thing cannot be allowed to occur in the Senate. If that does happen, we will be asking ourselves, yet again, what is the point of electing Republicans to a majority?
Paul is concerned about the rules that Mitch McConnell has put in place regarding witnesses. To call a witness will require a majority vote of 51 senators. Paul believes that rule favors the Democrats and will result in witnesses that are favorable to Trump not being called.
This concern is puzzling. Republicans have 53 seats. The Democrats have 45, plus two independents who hang with them. Theoretically, that should give Trump the edge! But…we are dealing with Republicans here. It is hard to find good things to say about Democrats, but the way they stick together and stay united is certainly one of them. If Trump is not allowed to call his witnesses, it will be due to RINOs and squishy moderates who are running scared.
Paul continued,
What I keep trying to convince my colleagues, particularly the ones that might vote to allow the witnesses that the Democrats want to call, is that if they do that and they don’t vote to allow the president to bring his witnesses in, I think the Republican base and Trump supporters are going to be very very unhappy with them. I think it will have electoral consequences — which is sort of my way of saying that maybe they should reconsider having any witnesses at all.
So, Paul is saying, let’s have ALL the witnesses or NONE of the witnesses. He’s also warning that there will be consequences at the ballot box. Sounds fair, right?
Rand Paul is also a big proponent of having the whistleblower to testify if witnesses are called. Will the Republicans have the guts to vote for that? Will they be able to stand and face the backlash saying they are endangering the precious whistleblower?
Regarding Adam Schiff’s staffs’ connections with the whistleblower, Rand said,
They should be asked what kind of communication they had with the whistleblower, when they started, if they have any text messages between themselves and the whistleblower. Maybe their texts look like Peter Strzok’s messages to Lisa Page. That would be interesting to know, if there was that degree of animus towards the president. Also, the whistleblower, who knows, he’s in government employment — has he been going back and forth with all his colleagues talking about bringing the president down? His lawyer has. He tweeted one week after President Trump was sworn in that ‘now is the time for a coup.
Let’s hope that Republicans close ranks and do the right thing in ensuring President Trump has a fair trial. That may be asking for a lot, considering the Mitt Romney and Lisa Murkowski types in the party.
