One thing I’ll say about the Democratic primaries leading up to the 2020 election is that it’s led to a lot more transparency than we’re used to seeing. Bobby O’Rourke has finally admitted that he actually DOES want to steal Americans’ legally owned guns. Elizabeth Warren is no longer laboring under the pretense of being even remotely Native American. Bernie Sanders is now wielding “capitalist” as an insult.
In a piece titled “Bernie Sanders slams Elizabeth Warren as ‘capitalist'” (emphasis mine), Fox News recounts comments made by Sanders in an interview on “This Week.” You know, in case you were looking for proof that we’d somehow entered an alternate dimension. Being called a capitalist is now a “slam.”
Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders – the self-proclaimed Democratic socialist whose standing in the 2020 primary has become threatened by Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s surge in the Democratic primary with progressive voters – is seeking to cut into the support of his rival by dismissing her as a “capitalist.”
“There are differences between Elizabeth and myself,” Sanders said during an interview Sunday on ABC’s “This Week.” “Elizabeth I think, as you know, has said that she is a capitalist through her bones. I’m not.”
Warren’s remarks were made last year, and frankly, that’s the most comforting part of this story to me. At least in a universe where only 51% of Americans think capitalism is a good idea, Liz is still telling obvious lies. She has yet to respond to this flagrant insult, as she certainly will see it, but probably whatever she says will be a shameless rewrite of history, both national and personal.
Honestly, I’m just at a loss here. I’m disgusted by the pandering lies we’re told by politicians who want our vote, but at least the fact that they pretended to be capitalists meant that the country, by and large, wanted them to be capitalists. Now we have presidential hopefuls on a path to make “capitalist” the new C-word because they believe they can count on America to let them. Worse, that America SUPPORTS them.
I don’t believe that Sanders or Warren or any of these “democratic socialists” are actually stupid enough to believe that socialism > capitalism (except AOC). What I do believe is that they’re counting on their constituents to be that stupid. That they’ve taken great lengths to MAKE their constituents that stupid. Why? Because when you look at who’s going to benefit the most from implementing these policies, it’s not the voters. It’s the implementers. It’s the Bernies.
