Last week, after announcing the withdrawal of American troops from Syria, President Trump wrote a letter to President Erdogan of Turkey. That letter has been released and it’s… really something:
“I will call you later.” OMG.
You guys, our president actually sent this letter to another world leader. I can’t stop laughing. Part of me is cringing at the lack of decorum and professionalism, and part of me loves it for the unapologetic Trumpy-ness of it.
It’s real. The White House confirmed it.
Seriously, though, this is what Trump does. Love it or hate it, he cuts through the bull and gets straight to the point. Stylistically, the letter may be found wanting, but the message is clear: resolve things with Syria humanely, and if you don’t resolve them humanely I’ll wreck your economy.
You have to give him credit for releasing this letter to the public. The transparency is great, but he had to know the flack he’d get over it. #trumpletter is trending on Twitter, and most of the responses are calling him an embarrassment, an idiot, or both. Of course, most of those people probably already thought those things about him. Those who hate Trump will cite this letter as another reason why he’s terrible, and those who don’t hate him will shrug and move on – we might have expected more professional from the President of the United States, but is anyone really surprised by this letter? I’m not. In a way, I find it refreshingly real.
I wonder how many other letters like this one Trump has sent to foreign leaders.
