Man Steals Speed Monitoring Device. . . While It Was In Use

While I do not intend to advocate for the theft of property or undermining the rule of law, I have to say there’s something heroic about a recent theft in Pennsylvania. On Monday, an as-of-yet unidentified man drove up to a “speed enforcement device,” packed it into his trunk, and fled. The best part? It was actively being used by police officers to catch speeders.

Is it going too far to call this man of mystery a modern Robin Hood? He managed to steal property that would otherwise lead to fines right under the cops’ noses– whether you agree with his actions or not, you gotta give him SOME credit for the sheer audacity. Which, by and large, Facebook users did.

“Not all heroes wear capes. Thank you for doing your due diligence as a citizen and keeping us safe from frivolous and excessive fining,” wrote one user.

“Did you guys check Craigslist? Great deals on there all the time,” reads another comment.

Other users were more sympathetic to the loss of property. One person wrote, “I am appalled at the amount of people praising this. I’m not sure they would feel the same if something of theirs was stolen. You have the right to disagree with speed traps, but you also have the ability to not speed. All actions have consequences.”

Another pointed out the obvious downside for the community: “Please remember that your tax $$ paid for the equipment, so you might be paying again to buy more equipment.”

I’ve gone through considerable lengths to sum up the conversation in the comments, because while scrolling through I saw one that started with “I never said you were racist, but. . .” and I’d like to spare you all from that sideshow.

Anyway, right or wrong, I have to admit I find this kind of funny in a cosmic sense. What do you think?
