Is the tide finally turning a little?
According to the sourcelink, Breanna Koski and Joanna Duka, owners of the Brush & Nib Studio, won their case in the Arizona Supreme Court yesterday. They had refused to create custom wedding invitations for same-sex couples, citing their Christian faith. And amazingly, the Arizona Supreme Court sided with them, which is the right decision, but also surprising given today’s cultural climate. The decision overturned lower court rulings (and there were a number of them).
In the decision, Justice Gould wrote, “Duka and Koski’s beliefs about same-sex marriage may seem old-fashioned, or even offensive to some. But the guarantees of free speech and freedom of religion are not only for those who are deemed sufficiently enlightened, advanced, or progressive. They are for everyone.’
Exactly.
The vice-chair of the AZ Democrat Party, Brianna Wesbrook, wasn’t happy, and tweeted that the decision, “opens the door to other bigoted owners to outright discriminate against LGBTQ people.”
Now here’s the interesting part. The invitation store owners had never been ASKED to create custom invitations for a same sex wedding, but they pre-emptively filed a lawsuit against the City of Phoenix to protest its non-discrimination law, which they believed violated their religious liberties. And I can’t really blame them. It was only a matter of time before activists tried to get them shut down simply because they didn’t want to be compelled to create wedding invitations for people whose weddings they didn’t believe in. They argued, in their initial complaint, that it’d be unfair for them to be forced to create art for events that go counter to their religious views.
Back in 2017, a trial judge ruled against their complaint, and they appealed. In the summer of 2018, the state Court of Appeals sided with the city, saying that if the women wanted to operate “their for-profit business as a public accommodation, they cannot discriminate against potential patrons based on sexual orientation.”
And now? The AZ Supreme Court has overruled those initial decisions. But don’t be surprised if this goes to the US Supreme Court next, seeing as how they sort of punted on the last similar case with the Colorado bakery.
This is why it’s so important that Trump is re-elected. Just remember how important Supreme Court picks are, and don’t ever forget the Left’s treatment of Brett Kavanaugh.
