Michael Moore Weighs in on Democratic Primary

I hate the use of ad hominem attacks against political opponents, especially when there’s plenty of perfectly legitimate, policy-based arguments to make. But Michael Moore just looks like the Goblin King from the first Hobbit movie.

I KNOW, I KNOW. Totally uncalled for.

Well, sort of. He is a bit of a troll.

Anyway, the reason I’m talking about Michael Moore at all is because of his commentary on Late Night with Seth Meyers regarding the Democratic primary.

“We have to have a beloved American running, not a professional politician,” Moore told “Late Night” host Seth Meyers. “You’ve got to have someone who inspires the base. The base, here, of the Democratic Party, are women, people of color, and young adults between 18-35. That’s 70 percent of who’s going to vote next year.”

Interesting statistic, but go on.

The Oscar-winning filmmaker explained that Democrats need a candidate that voters will be “excited” about, invoking “that feeling” people had for President Obama in 2008 and 2012.

“You couldn’t wait to get to the polls… Who are you going to say that about of the 25 that are running? Right now, when you wake up a year from November, ‘I can’t wait to get to the polls so I can vote for… John Hickenlooper!'” Moore joked. “Or ‘Joe Biden!’ I love Joe Biden… but we gotta win!”

Moore called picking the “safest candidate” the “hugest mistake,” insisting that Democrats need their “version” of Trump.

“He’s a street fighter. We need a street fighter. That’s the only way you’re going to defeat him,” he continued. “You’re going up against a bully.”

“Do you see street fighters- how many out of the 25 do you see as street fighters?” Meyers asked.

“Uh… two,” Moore responded, later name-dropping Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., as a “street fighter.”

I think Fox should do a bit of fact checking– I don’t recall The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey winning any Oscars, and if they did I doubt it was Michael Moore as Best Supporting Actor.

My favorite part of the interview, though, is that he starts by saying that they need to not run a professional politician, then names Bernie Sanders as one of, if not the, best bet of beating Trump. Literally what is Bernie if not a career politician?? A skin tag come to life??? That’s not inspiring.

Really, what I’m hearing Moore say is that Marianne Williamson should be the nominee. She’s not a politician (like Trump), she’s a long shot candidate (like Trump was at this stage of the 2016 election), and no one takes her seriously (like Trump at this stage of the 2016 election and still among most, if not all, Democrats). I, for one, would be THRILLED to see that happen.
