June 23, 2019On Friday morning, an explosion and fire broke out at an oil refinery in Philadelphia. Several individuals were treated for minor injuries, and residents in nearby areas reported feeling explosions.
“The explosion and fire came from a vat of butane – one of the products that comes from the process of refining crude oil – at the Philadelphia Energy Solutions refinery starting around 4 a.m., Deputy Fire Commissioner Craig Murphy said.
Murphy confirmed during an afternoon press conference that propane was also in the vat.
The refinery’s fire crews have been fighting the flames with city fire crews in support, and the blaze has been contained to the general vat area, Murphy said.
People east of the fire were initially asked to shelter in place, but that order was quickly lifted. Officials decided to let the fire burn itself out due to an inaccessible valve and air quality concerns:
The fire cannot be placed under control because of the propane and butane that’s burning in the vat, which is being fed by a main. Murphy said the main has to be shutdown to put out the fire, but Philadelphia Energy Solutions says they are unable to get to the valve that would shut off the main.
This creates a dilemma for the fire department, Murphy said, because if firefighters were to put out the fire, “whatever’s blowing out of the main blows right into the atmosphere.”
Damage to the refinery appears to be limited to the vat area. Surrounding tanks were cooled as a precaution.
So, it sounds like a vat containing two highly flammable substances caught fire and exploded, right? That sounds like a reasonable explanation.
AOC is blaming climate change. Seriously.
Her tweet came before details were released about the cause of the explosion, but still. She was called out for the tenuous connection between the explosion and climate change.
Right. Regardless of your position on climate change, it seems like a stretch to suggest this particular event was caused by climate change. This seems like simply fear-mongering for support for her crazy Green New Deal proposals.
