There have been a number of reports of potential UFO sightings in recent years.
President Trump is a little skeptical that these sightings might actually be alien technology:
“I think it’s probably – Want them to think whatever they think,” Trump told ABC’s George Stephanopoulos in their interview, which will air Sunday. “They do say, and I’ve seen, and I’ve read, and I’ve heard. And I did have one very brief meeting on it. But people are saying they’re seeing UFOs. Do I believe it? Not particular.”
“Well, I think my great pilots would know,” he continued. “Our great pilots would know. They see things a little bit different from the past. So we’re going to see. We’re watching, and you’ll be the first to know.”
I appreciate Trump’s skepticism, but also his deference to those who spend their time out in the air and therefore might know more. It’s a great big universe out there, so I think it’s a little presumptuous to assume we’re entirely alone in it. That’s not to say I necessarily believe in “aliens” – just that I wouldn’t be surprised if we eventually find signs of “life” somewhere out in the universe.
To be fair, though, I’m a big sci-fi fan. I own every episode of shows like Farscape and Stargate. So I may be a little biased based on my love of fictional universes.
In response to an increase in “UFO sightings” in recent years, the U.S. Navy is updating their reporting procedures:
“For safety and security concerns, the Navy and the [U.S. Air Force] takes these reports seriously and investigates each and every report,” the Navy wrote in an April statement to Politico. “As part of this effort, the navy is updating and formalizing the process by which reports of any suspected incursions can be made to the cognizant authorities. A new message to the fleet that will detail the steps for reporting is in draft.”
Of course, the U.S. military is less concerned that these UFO sightings are extraterrestrial and more concerned that they might be foreign (but earthly) technology.
