WATCH: We only have 12 years to save the planet
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has been making quite a few surprising confessions over the past few days.
Over the weekend, she attempted to slam critics of her Green New Deal for taking her own words literally. She admitted that her 12 year warning is a joke.
This is a technique of the GOP, to take dry humor + sarcasm literally and “fact check” it.
Like the “world ending in 12 years” thing, you’d have to have the social intelligence of a sea sponge to think it’s literal.
But the GOP is basically Dwight from The Office so who knows. https://t.co/pmkwrdeAnq

To be clear, AOC said, “We’re, like, the world is going to end in 12 years if we don’t address climate change.”
There were no obvious signs of humor. It should also be noted that the 12 year warning is based on a 2018 UN report on climate change. According to AOC, we should consider that nothing more than a comedy routine.
PS– If the GOP is Dwight from The Office (who has one of the best character developments of the whole show), she’s Erin. She has good intentions– not quite corrupted (yet)– but she literally has no idea how anything works. People just kinda nod and smile at her, because honestly…what’s the point?
That’s not the only confession AOC’s made. She also admitted that the economy under Trump’s presidency is pretty fantastic.
US GDP is at an all-time high. As a nation, we are more prosperous than we ever have been.
But that’s simply not the lived truth. Even now, I’m paid similar to a doctor or corporate lawyer – many who‘d think they are “rich,” but it’s nowhere near what we actually mean in policy.

She goes on to admit that a cranking economy isn’t good enough. She has dreams for a utopian society fulfilling her idea of “good” and “moral.”
Ultimately, living in a moral society, a good nation, means establishing some basic standards of dignity:
– healthcare as a right
– a living wage
– public education that prepares for civil society + economy (which now shld incl college)
– all people having power in the economy— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) May 11, 2019
And in the meantime, as we continue fighting for Medicare for All, a living wage, & more:
Unionize your workplace.
Demand a raise.
And don’t stop until you get one. 💪🏽— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) May 11, 2019
A good economy– with a rising tide that lifts all boats– isn’t enough. Government must grow, and the rich must pay.
