SNL’s Cold Open Hitting Republicans Has No Basis In Fact

SNL is notoriously liberal-leaning. While they often spoof on political matters on both sides, there’s no question that they make a special effort to bash Republicans and, particularly, Republicans who support the president.

This was a reminder.

This week’s SNL opened up with a cold open featuring their version of “NBC’s “Meet the Press.” The topic of their discussion? “What would it take for President Trump to lose your support?”

In it, Chuck Todd (played by Kyle Mooney) interviews Sens. Lindsey Graham, played by Kate McKinnon, Susan Collins, played by Cecily Strong and Mitch McConnell, played by Beck Bennett.

Via Fox:

An exasperated Todd then moves on and asks: “What would it take for President Trump to lose your support?” He then suggests scenarios such as Robert Mueller testifying before Congress that Trump obstructed justice, colluded with Russia or that the president is not as religious as he claims to be.

“Well, we need a leader who’s doing what he’s got to do to win,” Bennett’s McConnell says of obstruction and collusion, as McKinnon’s Graham agrees.

“The best way to uphold the law is to be above it,” the Graham character says.

“I’d have to write a strongly worded email and send it directly to my draft folder,” the Collins character adds.

Todd even asks if they’d stop supporting Trump if he left Melania for Stormy Daniels. Yeah. THAT’S how weird this gets.

They continue:

“If Trump open-hand slaps you in the face, what would you say then?” Todd asked.

“Harder, Daddy,” Graham said.

The thing is, MSM routinely reports as if these “what ifs” are true. Perhaps that’s why this fell so flat.
