I remember seeing this clip before, but since Bernie announced that he’s running again, it’s resurfacing.

He once praised food lines. FLASHBACK:

“You know, it’s funny. Sometimes American journalists talk about how bad a country is when people are lining up for food. That’s a good thing. In other countries, people don’t line up for food. The rich get the food and the poor starve to death,” Sanders said.

Bernie explains in this video that it’s a good thing for people to be standing in line to get food.
Because he figures that when there are no lines, the rich keep all the food for themselves.
Like AOC’s “low unemployment because of two jobs” comment.

I know there are a bunch of people out there who are all, “OMG you people are SO taking the clip out of context.”

OK. Question. WHAT CONTEXT WOULD POSSIBLY MAKE THAT KIND OF IDIOTIC STATEMENT OK? Food lines are NEVER a good thing. It’s not a sign of prosperity.

Anyway, context:

Take Sanders’ defenses of the authoritarian Sandinista regime in Nicaragua, which he visited and enthusiastically supported while mayor of Burlington, Vermont in the 1980s. When asked about his support for the Sandinistas in light of the food shortages in the country that resulted in people standing in bread lines, Sanders retorted:

I realize they are old clips, but it’d be one thing if Bernie used to be a raging socialist. The problem is, he still is. His views haven’t changed. THAT’S what makes these clips relevant.
