LOTS of rumors swirling around social media right now questioning whether the Native American activist at the center of the Covington Catholic School story is actually a Vietnam war vet.
Here’s one source of the rumor floating around:
BREAKING Nathan Phillips, who was ‘harassed’ by Covington Catholic MAGA teens, lied about being a Marine Combat vet during Vietnam war. Phillips was born in 1955. He claimed to have joined the military at 17. That puts him at 1972. The last Marine combat unit left Vietnam in 1971 pic.twitter.com/rg9Yib8dvh

I found this article helpful.
According to the Washington Times story link above, it’s true that Nathan Phillips is 64, putting him at age 18 in 1973, which was the last year that any US combat units were in Vietnam. However, as the tweet above indicates, the last Marine combat unit left Vietnam in ’71. Sooo…..????
Well, apparently, there is only evidence of Nathan Phillips saying he’s a “Vietnam ERA veteran” or “Vietnam times veteran” – which of course has been interpreted (as I’m sure he intended) as him actually SERVING in Vietnam.
So anyway, that’s the deal. If anything, the fact that he keeps referring to himself in that manner just makes him all the more sketch to me.
Discuss.
