My fiancé and I have watched a couple of episodes of the Sci-Fi show ‘Black Mirror.’ Written as an anthology, each episode tackles modern technology gone bad.
On that especially stood out to me was an episode about a “social standing” system, where people were prevented from traveling, shopping, and even entering buildings if their “social score” wasn’t high enough.
This, of course, affected every human interaction people ever had.
It all felt too real – so many are addicted to their social media these days, posting every last moment for the world to digest and pat them on the back about. Is nothing private? Not really. Not anymore. Did you even get married if you don’t post 1,000 pictures of YOUR “special day?” Did your kid actually get an A if all of your friends don’t say “GOOD JOB!” on Facebook?
I’m fully aware of it – and I can’t even say I’m entirely innocent of it. I’m pretty active on social media myself.
ANYWAY – this episode felt like a warning – but it’s not. In China, it’s a REALITY.
…and like it or not, it’s coming to the West.
Terrifying.
