Minimum wage is set to go up to $12 in my new home state of Arizona… and I am appalled. (Note: Businesses that have less than $500,000 in gross income are exempt. So basically… don’t you DARE become too successful.)
This will GREATLY impact many businesses. Much like what has happened in many parts of California, many WILL shutter their doors. Mark my words: People WILL lose their jobs.
What the liberal idealists that advocate for higher and higher minimum wages don’t understand is that this doesn’t mean people will all make more money – it means low-skill jobs will simply be wiped out. Most businesses cannot AFFORD to pay 12-15 bucks an hour for someone to stand there and take your change.
No – I’m not saying that EVERYONE who works a minimum-wage job is entirely unskilled. Many are, however, and you better believe they’re not keeping their jobs if they end up making more than the business owners do for simply BEING THERE.
It’s not that I don’t WANT to end poverty or that I don’t WANT everyone to get big juicy paychecks – it’s that I understand basic economics.
And raising minimum wage doesn’t make everyone well-off. THAT’S JUST NOT HOW THIS WORKS.
Anyway, Twitter user @hboulware PERFECTLY lays out why this whole “fight for 15” nonsense is just that… nonsense.
I’m positive that everyone demanding minimum wage be a federally mandated $15/hr has never owned or run a small business. Or any business.

They seem to assume that every business is WalMart. When that’s not even remotely true. The vast majority of businesses are small businesses. Almost all fast food businesses are franchises.

Even when shown evidence of the harm done when the minimum wage is raised to “a living wage” these people insist that it’s just not being done correctly.

And of course it’s almost always privileged progressives insisting on this. Because they evidently care more about their ideology than the people they hurt when their ideology is put into practice.

I’m aware that all ideologies are flawed. It’s one thing to idealize anarchy, for example, it’s an entirely different thing to think it could actually work in the U.S. The same goes for socialism.

Mostly because both ideologies ignore the fundamental problem of human nature. Socialism is particularly insidious because it sounds reasonable and good. But in practice, except in small realively homogenous countries, it fails spectacularly.

America is an incredibly wealthy country. We’re an incredibly generous country. We won’t be either if socialists get their way.

Any questions?
