Life can get tough, but if you’re an American, you have a reason to be grateful when you wake up in the morning. Nothing else can be going right. Maybe you’re having family trouble. Perhaps your job sucks. Maybe you’re just in a weird funk. It happens, but if you’re an American, at least be grateful for that. Many people aren’t so lucky. Case in point.
Beijing is gearing up to implement a surveillance program on residents– and no. Not just “crime-prone” residents. Absolutely everyone will have their behavior monitored by the government, and they’ll either be “rewarded” or “punished” based on the government’s findings.
By the beginning of 2020, the announcement declares, China’s capital city will have all residents officially locked into the permanent surveillance program, part of a broader effort to have every Chinese citizen rated on a “social credit system” decreeing what public services a person can use based on their obedience to laws and loyalty to the communist regime.
The government will use the data collected to assess citizens’ behavior to decide if an individual is law-abiding and “trustworthy” to the Communist Party.
How will the “rewards” and “punishments” work, you ask? After examining your overall behavior, faceless bureaucrats will determine if you’re a “good” citizen or “bad” citizen. If you’re “good”– AKA a “friend” of the communist state– you’ll get perks like good credit scores. But if you’re what they consider to be a “troublemaker”– AKA unloyal– they’ll do everything in their power to make your life more difficult. You won’t have priority access to medical care and other general public services.
“Efforts will be made to build a market supervision mechanism with corporate credit as the core,” states Beijing’s municipal website, adding that it will explore the implementation of what it calls “the personal integrity project,” which will utilize residents’ credit scores for “market access, public services, tourism,” and “fields such as entrepreneurship and job hunting.”
Higher scores can also open the “green channel,” which will expedite residents’ applications for higher quality “education and medical resources.”
“Those who violate the law and lose trust will pay a heavy price,” adds the government website, stating that it will “improve the blacklist system” and that residents will find themselves “limited everywhere, and difficult to move” if they are deemed untrustworthy by the Communists in control.
It’s easy to forget that ridiculously overbearing, corrupt regimes like this still exist in the world.
Be a good communist, or screw you. – Beijing, basically.
People still live like that. Add that to the never-ending list of reasons I have a hard time taking liberals seriously when they whine about being “oppressed” in our amazing country. Screw that. What a load. Shut up, look around and be grateful for your life as an American.
