I have been eagerly following coverage of Melania’s trip to Ghana.
It’s been really fun – as I have been to many of the places she’s visiting now. I was especially struck by her visit to Cape Coast castle, as it was a poignantly emotional visit for me as well.
Day two in #Ghana was so impactful. My visit to Cape Coast castle was a solemn reminder of a time in our history that should never be forgotten. Thank you to Chief Osabarima Kwesi Atta & the chieftains for the warm welcome & cultural ceremony. #FLOTUSinAfrica2018 pic.twitter.com/pdf9yrmQL8

Like Melania, I was welcomed with love and generosity by the lovely people of Ghana.

And yeah… that’s me on the right.

BEFORE YOU SAY ANYTHING ABOUT MY HAIR. A few local women offered to do it – it’s how they made their money. I paid them, they braided my hair and talked to me about their culture. It was a really fun and informative exchange. Come at me about cultural appropriation – WHATEVER. But if you do, and you’re not Mexican (I’m born and raised) I instantly demand you never eat a taco again. SO SUCK IT.
Anyway- it’s been really fun watching Melania’s trip because Ghana holds a special place in my heart. Watching the videos of her, I can tell it will in hers, too.
I have covered @FLOTUS for almost two years and have never seen her smile and laugh more than she is now with these baby elephants 🐘 pic.twitter.com/Cmbt9HpV6k

I mean LOOK. AT. THIS.
. @FLOTUS *dances* with the kids at Nest, entering the baby orphanage as they hold her hands and bring her inside pic.twitter.com/qWG8iNZsET

I love this so hard. I TOTALLY get it. How do you NOT dance?!
She’s having such a lovely time there!
Thank you Ghana! 🇺🇸 🇬🇭 pic.twitter.com/d34cqFyRdN

So what do people focus on?
The pith helmet Melania Trump wore during a Kenyan safari wasn’t her most glaring faux pas. But some see her choice of a symbol of European colonial rule as a big error on the global stage. https://t.co/509wb8PJxu

*sigh*
Her RACIST hat.
Melania Trump wearing a pith helmet on her trip to “Africa” is more than a silly sartorial choice. It’s a reflection of her outdated understanding of Africa. (Also, she was photographed in safari attire multiple times on this trip.) #FLOTUSinAfricaBingo https://t.co/aCnkOnPBF8

Yeah. F’real. They’re all over it.
Oh. And her boots. Her boots are racist, too.
I see Melania went with the “perpetrator of a colonial massacre” boot choice. Tres chic. Just missing the pith helmet. https://t.co/VKVTABgkZF

lol, I swear I missed the fact that she’s actually carrying a pith helmet in those photos. My bad. Complete look achieved.

That OG genocidaire look is very popular with the safari crowd. pic.twitter.com/tXie6xNAKM

Yeah. Because Melania is super in to “genocide,” don’t you know?
I just cannot.
