Soooo….I’ll be honest. I’m a little surprised Brown vetoed this.
Not because it makes ANY sense – the bill is absolutely ridiculous – but rather because Democrats uphold abortion above all else, and I figured any bill that makes abortion easier is a shoe-in in liberal California, regardless of how absurd it is.
The vetoed bill, SB320, forces public California universities to provide abortion pills to students.
I think it’s important to note that this is NOT the “morning after pill” we’re talking about. The morning after pill and the abortion pill are two very different drugs.
For reference :
The morning-after pill is a hormonal contraceptive. When taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex or contraception failure, it can help to prevent pregnancy. The morning-after pill is sold over-the-counter to people of any age and consists of one pill that contains the progestin, levonorgestrel. It is sold under the following names: Plan B One-Step, Next Choice One Dose, My Way, Take Action, and AfterPill.
The abortion pill (also referred to as M&M, Mifeprex, RU486, and mifepristone) is used as an early medical abortion option. It results in a termination of a pregnancy and is only used after pregnancy is established (and no more than 49 days since a woman’s last menstrual period).
The bill planned on providing the ACTUAL abortion pill.
Governor Brown says it’s a no-go.
According to Fox News:
SB320, introduced by Sen. Connie Leyva, D-Chino, would have required university health centers to offer women medical abortions on campus by Jan. 1, 2022. The majority of the funds– $9.6 million– would come from private donors, The Sacramento Bee reported.
The bill also required a $200,000 grant to the University of California and California State University systems to provide 24-hour phone service to abortion medication recipients, according to the report.
Basically, Democrats are calling for free abortions on demand. I’m surprised they haven’t called for a “free” abortion pill delivery service yet.
In his veto message, Gov. Brown called the bill “unnecessary,” noting that abortions are a “long-protected right in California.” He said most abortion providers are within a reasonable distance from campus communities.
NOT. CLOSE. ENOUGH.
Abortions – EVERYWHERE.
Anyway… this isn’t done. Rep. Leyva will bring it back up. You know – because of Trump.
After the governor’s veto, Leyva said she will introduce the bill next session.
“As the Trump Administration continues to unravel many of the critical health care protections and services for women, legislation such as this is urgently needed to make sure that Californians are able to access the full range of reproductive care regardless of where they may live,” Leyva said in a statement.
They HAVE access. We already fund freaking Planned Parenthood at half a billion dollars a year. Surely there’s a Planned Parenthood on every corner in California. You know, like Starbucks.
Does this Rep ACTUALLY think at-school-abortions are necessary?
REALLY?
