Serena Williams Faces More Penalties Over Her Outburst At The US Open

Serena Williams had an emotional night at the US Open. Everything really started going off the rails after the umpire accused her of getting coaching from the sideline. She was VERY offended by that accusation and let him know.

“One thing I’ve never done is cheat. If he gives me a thumbs up, he’s telling me to come on. We don’t have any code, and I know you don’t know that. And I understand why you may have thought that was coaching, but I’m telling you it’s not. I don’t cheat to win. I’d rather lose,” she said.

It’s awkward, because her coach admitted to it.

“I’m honest, I was coaching,” Patrick Mouratoglou said after the game. “I don’t think she looked at me, so that’s why she didn’t even think I was.”

“I was, like 100 percent of the coaches in 100 percent of the matches, so we have to stop this hypocritical thing,” he continued.

He also pointed out that Naomi Osaka’s coach was “coaching every point too.”

At some point during the match, Williams broke a racquet and continued to give Ramos a piece of her mind.

“This is unbelievable,” she told Ramos. “Every time I play here, I have problems…I didn’t get coaching. I didn’t get coaching. I didn’t get coaching. You need to make an announcement that I didn’t get coaching,” she said. “I don’t cheat. I didn’t get coaching. How can you say that? You owe me an apology. You owe me an apology. I have never cheated in my life. I have a daughter, and I stand for what’s right for her. I’ve never cheated. You owe me an apology. You will never do another one of my matches.”

All of that led to a third violation for “verbal abuse.”

“Are you kidding me?” Williams said. “Because I said you’re a thief? Because you stole a point from me. But I’m not a cheater. I told you to apologize to me.”

After the game, Williams suggested that Ramos only penalized her so harshly because she’s a woman.

“I’m here fighting for women’s rights and for women’s equality and for all kinds of stuff,” she said. “For me to say ‘thief,’ and for him to take a game, it made me feel like it was a sexist remark. He’s never taken a game from a man because they said ‘thief.’”

People have a LOT of opinions on that. I don’t really follow tennis, but I’ve heard 1.) That people can get mouthy but ALSO 2.) That Serena Williams is NOTORIOUSLY mouthy.

Anyway. She’s paying in more ways than one. She’s facing some hefty fines.

From TMZ:

Williams will be fined $17,000 for 3 separate code violations during the tennis tournament’s final.

-$4,000 for a coaching violation.

-$3,000 for smashing her racquet.

-$10,000 for verbal abuse towards the umpire.

The money will simply be deducted from her earnings as a runner-up, which come to $1.85 million.

Yeah…something tells me she’ll survive.
