UGH. This woman. UGGGGHHHHHHH.
According to the sourcelink, there’s a chick named Siobhan O’Dwyer, who’s an Australian academic with a PhD in Philosophy, and she’s super hung up about her PhD title.
How do I know this? Because of this tweet.
Hey @Qantas, my name is Dr O’Dwyer. My ticket says Dr O’Dwyer. Do not look at my ticket, look at me, look back at my ticket, decide it’s a typo, and call me Miss O’Dwyer. I did not spend 8 years at university to be called Miss.

So apparently over there down yonder in Oz, they put titles on airline tickets. Maybe they even do that here – I don’t know – because IT DOESN’T FREAKING MATTER to normal people.
But you guys, it gets so much worse.
Copping so much flack for this tweet. This was not about my ego. It was about highlighting one of a thousand instances of sexism that women encounter every day. It’s not about the title, it’s about the fact that this wouldn’t have happened if I was a man. https://t.co/1XHvQIb2iZ

SEXISM, you guys. OMG.
Your name, you insufferable egomaniac, is Siobhan O’Dwyer, and you look feminine enough that the flight attendant called you “Miss” which was actually POLITE. That’s literally all that happened here. And you’re right, it wouldn’t have happened if you were a man, because typically men aren’t giant hags about their stupid philosophy doctorate titles. If this simple mistake would have happened to a dude who was called “Mr” instead of “Dr,” he’d more than likely not have made a giant case out of it and instead simply moved on with his life.
This is precisely the kind of sh*t that makes people hate rabid radical feminists who think everything is sexist.
Incidentally, if a dude DID act the way Siobhan is acting, I’d be calling him out just as hard, because people who get this maniacal about their doctorate titles need to chill.
And lest you think I’m being too hard on her about this, you should know that Siobhan wanted it to be clear to her FREAKING BANK that she had a doctorate:
Ten years ago when I got my PhD, I went into the bank & said I wanted to change my title. The woman said “Congratulations! What’s your married name?” – Sigh.

If you’ve got yourself so wrapped up in ego that you need your bank teller to refer to you by “Doctor” you have serious issues. That’s neat that you wrote a thesis about aging or suicide or whatever, and it’s cool that you got an advanced degree for it. Yay you. But if you’re not rewarded enough by the Actual Work, and it’s this important to you to be recognized for your years of schooling, perhaps you should check your priorities.
It gets better.
A colleague of Siobhan’s, another academic weirdo named Mel Thomson (whose tweets are now protected), chimed in to support Siobhan, and ended up disparaging an entire community of flight attendants in the process. BEHOLD what was screencaptured prior to Mel running scared:
WHOA. TROLLEY DOLLY. That’s what Mel called the flight attendant who was just BEING FREAKING POLITE. You wanna see what sexism looks like? Look no further that that condescending, belittling tweet of Mel’s. WHAT A HAG.
Siobhan then proceeded to whine more about how Twitter is meeeeeean to her:
See, it’s only “academic women” that experience meanness on Twitter, y’all. She is VERY VERY VERY IMPORTANT AND SPECIAL, and you better RECOGNIZE THAT, peasants.
Holy crap if she could just experience a DAY in our Twitter shoes. She wouldn’t know what hit her.
Once a few publications started picking up the story, Siobhan got miffed that the authors weren’t contacting her for a personal statement:
Well this is just lazy journalism. No attempt to contact me or @DrMel_T for comment. Basically just collating tweets & calling it news. A lost opportunity for serious reporting on everyday sexism.
— Dr Siobhan O’Dwyer (@Siobhan_ODwyer) September 5, 2018
So you see that says 7.16am on Sept 5, right? Get a load of this:
Hi Jaimee, thanks for your message. I’m turning down all media invitations because the online response has been so vitriolic & I don’t want to provide further opportunities for attack. Thanks for your interest though, it’s most appreciated.
— Dr Siobhan O’Dwyer (@Siobhan_ODwyer) September 5, 2018
Soooo, not even a half hour AFTER she says she’s turning down all media requests, she rips on a publication for not contacting her to talk about the story.
Mmmmkay.
FYI. I’m not contacting her for comment about this story, because the conversation would only end up going something like this:
Me: Hi- can I speak to Siobhan O’Dwyer please.
Siobhan: That’s DOCTOR O’Dwyer.
Me: (Hangs up because ain’t nobody got time fo that.)
By the way, I loved this response to Mel from a flight attendant about the whole Trolley Dolly comment:
OH SNAP.
My sister worked in academia for a short time after she first moved to AZ, and was amazed at how much titles and hierarchy MATTER to the people there. There are far too many academics who think WAAAAAAAAY too much of themselves, and it’s just one of many reasons why university educations have gone to sh*t. It’s all ego and social justice crap now, instead of critical thinking about meaningful subjects.
Siobhan and Mel can suck it. They’re not even getting a “Ms” from me.
