August 28, 2018John Goodman is finally speaking out. He came to Roseanne’s defense and confirmed that she is not, in fact, a racist.
“I know, I know, for a fact that she’s not a racist,” he said.
He talked a little bit about how hard the show’s cancelation was on all of them but expressed his excitement for the spin-off series.
“I was broken-hearted,” he said. “I went through a period, about a month, where I was very depressed. That had a great deal to do with it, more than I wanted to admit.”
“She had to sign a paper saying that she relinquished all her rights to the show so that we could go on,” he said of Roseanne.”I sent her an email and thanked her for that. I did not hear anything back, but she was going through hell at the time. And she’s still going through hell.”
I just don’t see how the show will have the same charm without her character. And how are they going to make her *poof* disappear from the show? Are they going to like, send her character away to rehab?
Nope. According to John Goodman, they’re straight up killing her off.
In an interview with the Sunday Times, John Goodman confirms that Roseanne Barr’s Roseanne character will be killed off to make room for the Barr-less spinoff, The Conners. Describing his character on the show, which was hastily conceived by ABC after Barr’s racist tweets caused the smash-hit Roseanne revival’s abrupt cancellation, Goodman says, “I guess he’ll be mopey and sad because his wife’s dead.”
What a completely crappy way to start a show, ESPECIALLY because we know the TRUE reason her character is absent. It’s not like she didn’t want to participate. They could’ve kept the original “Roseanne” reboot going.
It always gets super awkward when a show kills off a character for reasons other than the intended storyline. Example: I freaking love Kevin James and Leah Remini and the fact that they had an on-screen reunion (but “King of Queens” forever), but it was SO AWK the way they killed off his wife Donna in “Kevin Can Wait.”
I feel like “The Conners” is already off to a weird start. I’m sure the first episode will have a ton of viewership, just due to the curiosity factor. But I imagine it’ll drop off.
