The DNC Is Attempting To Rework Its ‘Superdelegate’ System

Democrats should be happy about this. Heck, I’m happy for them.

Reach WAAAAAAAAY back into your memory. I’m talking the Democratic Primary– back in the day when Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders went head to head. Want to know one of the reasons Hillary knew she had it in the bag? The superdelegate system, AKA the system that helped to ensure that she would be the Democratic nominee regardless of who the people voted for.

It sounds like the DNC is attempting to do something about their unfair process.

The Democratic National Committee voted Saturday to limit the influence of superdelegates — part of a series of changes to the presidential nominating process to reunite the party after a fractious 2016 primary process.

The reforms, passed at the body’s summer meeting in Chicago, include a measure that requires superdelegates to refrain from voting on the first presidential nomination ballot, unless a candidate has enough votes from pledged delegates.

“Today is a historic day for our party. We passed major reforms that will not only put our next presidential nominee in the strongest position possible, but will help us elect Democrats up and down the ballot, across the country,” DNC Chair Tom Perez stated.

“These reforms will help grow our party, unite Democrats, and restore voters’ trust by making our 2020 nominating process the most inclusive and transparent in our history,” he added.

They’re hoping this encourages more “grassroots” candidates. It’s they’re only hope of survival, really. They only pick establishment candidates, and look how that worked out for them in 2016…

In the end, Clinton’s lead with superdelegates did not make a crucial difference, because she held a lead of pledged delegates. But critics of the superdelegate structure say that tallies appeared to give Clinton a bigger edge than she had because of the superdelegates.

Still, the fact that she secured so many pledged delegates took the wind right out of Bernie’s sails. His supporters lost confidence. Speaking of Bernie, he sounds pleased.
