A California school district is officially giving girls permission to dress a little on the skanky side.
Sorry, but I couldn’t think of a more tender way to state that.
Here’s the scoop. The Alameda Unified School District (AUSD) has introduced what’s been dubbed as the “anti-dress code,” which basically gives students permission to wear tube tops, pjs and basically anything that doesn’t straight up show their nips or butts. Even belly shirts are permissible.
Go to any department store’s “Juniors” section & you will find #croptops. Thanks to a change in the dress code, students of Alameda Unified School District can now wear them to class, along with tube tops & ripped pants. According to the policy, hats, hoodie sweatshirts, leggings, yoga pants, skinny jeans, midriff baring tops, pajamas, ripped jeans (as long as underwear is not exposed), tank tops including spaghetti straps, halter tops and tube tops are all fair game. Sweatpants, shorts, skirts, dresses, pants, religious headwear, athletic attire and clothing with logos are also allowed.
Meanwhile, the youth are barred from wearing anything with language or imagery promoting drugs, alcohol, violence, hate speech, profanity or pornography, as well as visible underwear or bathing suits.
The school district is doing this for two reasons: 1.) They want to spend less time yelling at kids for dressing inappropriately and 2.) They want girls for feel more “empowered” and less “body-shamed.” Yes, really.
Reps for AUSD told the Chronicle that school board officials agreed to change the dress code after some female students complained about feeling body-shamed from enforcement of the old dress code last year.
Listen– I don’t want to be the clothing police either, but there’s a time and place for booty shorts, and that time and place shouldn’t be in Geometry class. As I see it, adults are expected to adhere to dress codes at their work place. Going to school IS a kid’s version of “work.” Therefore, it’s completely acceptable to have some kind of dress code. And don’t come at me and say, “You don’t know how much it sucks to have a dress code!” because I went to a private school and wore school uniforms– only navy blue skirts or pants and only red, white or navy collared shirts– from 4th grade right up through middle school. I PAID $5 TO WEAR JEANS ON FRIDAYS YOU GUYS. So PLEASE. I get it. And I got in trouble on my last day of high school for wearing a VERY modest tank top. So…I get it. I think I have room to talk here. And that was back in the day before the trends were straight skank. I grew up in the era of layers. We deliberately wore t-shirts under our spaghetti strap dresses for absolutely no reason. Anyone else remember that?
I’m just saying, SOME restrictions are fine by me. I think giving the green light to bellllaaaaay shirts is a crappy move, but I especially hate it because they’re low-key doing it in the name of feminism.
Thoughts?
