Texas School Removes Controversial, ‘Sexist’ Sign From Middle School Hallway

A middle school in Texas caused OUTRAGE when parents discovered a sign posted above the students’ lockers:

Okay… so don’t shoot me for this… but I’m not a fan either. Not for the same reason most other people seem to be freaking out, though. So hear me out:

I’m ALL for teaching girls to be ladies, and boys to be gentlemen, I’m also ALL for teaching kids personal responsibility.

I will teach my future sons to be gentlemen, REGARDLESS of how the people around them comport themselves. A gentleman is a gentleman to all. THAT is the TRUE sign of a gentleman. If I ever caught my sons mouthing off or being disrespectful to a woman, regardless of how AWFUL she was, I would WOOP THEIR BEHINDS… because it means they were never TRUE gentlemen in the first place.

See what I’m saying? Other people’s failings do not mandate YOUR class.

So YES – I think girls should act like ladies – and I think boys should act like gentlemen REGARDLESS of how someone around them acts. This isn’t about “sexism” to me – it’s about personal responsibility. You and ONLY YOU are responsible for YOUR actions.

ANYWAY… the sign’s been taken down.

According to Daily Mail: 

A ‘sexist’ sign at a Houston school has been removed after it caused an uproar on social media.

The quote, which sat above a row of lockers at Gregory-Lincoln elementary school in Houston Independent School District, read: ‘The more you act like a lady, the more he’ll act like a gentleman.’

Many expressed their horror, saying they believed the quote was victim-blaming and perpetuating the women are responsible for men’s actions.

The REALLY messed up part?

Where the quote came from:

According to KTRK, the quote is attributed to Sydney Biddle Barrows, a businesswoman and founder of a New York escort agency.

She was arrested in October 1984 for promoting prostitution, for which she pleaded guilty and was fined $5,000.

Barrows became known as the ‘Mayflower Madam’ after New York Post reporter Peter Fearon revealed her ancestry could be traced back to three Mayflower passengers.

WTF? Why is some MADAM’s quote up in a Middle School?

That’s reason ENOUGH not to want it posted.

The school has released a statement:

On Saturday morning, the district released a statement that the sign had been taken down.

‘Please be advised that the quote on the wall of Gregory Lincoln PK-5 Education Center has been removed,’ the statement read.

‘Overnight, the wall decal letters were taken down, the wall was floated out, and new slab of drywall was installed and painted.’

Again… it’s not really a sexism thing for me. I just think students should always be encouraged to be responsible for their OWN behavior.

After all, do you want some kid who’s bullying a girl to be able to say “well… she wasn’t acting like a lady, so I felt no need to act like a gentleman.”

NO. NO YOU DO NOT.
