I never had to “come out” to my parents as a conservative. I kind of grew up in a conservative household. I don’t remember my parents being actively political. They were just always common sense. That’s what I always associated conservatism with: Common sense.
However, I had a helluva time in college. You know how most people say you make friendships that last a lifetime or– ultimately– meet your soulmate? Yeah, no. That didn’t happen to me. Not one person from my entire school talks to me. I was literally fired from the school paper three days before I graduated, because I was a conservative and they had enough and wanted to “show me who’s boss” and satisfy the screeches from the perpetually offended student body. How DARE I not think like all of them! How DARE I say OUTRAGEOUS things like, “Stop calling all cops racist murderers” or “I don’t want to share a bathroom with a man.” The NERVE, right?
It was different for me, because I never faced direct opposition from the people closest to me. It’s always been classmates, professors or faceless losers online. My family has always encouraged me and helped me solidify my beliefs. I can’t imagine how hard it is to “come out” to a liberal family. It has to be tough.
All that being said, check out Candace Owens’ “coming out” story.
“What about Beyonce?!?!?”
The sad thing is, I bet that argument has been used before.
