The last few times I’ve been to the mall, I’ve noticed a kiosk with a big sign reading, “Dragon’s Breath”! I’m not gonna lie. It piqued my interest, and it took a few months, but I eventually caved. My sister and I got a $7 cup of cold garbage cereal to see what the hype was all about.
It sucked. For starters, it tasted like crap. There were also warnings everywhere. Because they freeze the cereal with liquid nitrogen, you have to eat the cereal balls in a very strategic and careful way.
I don’t know about you, but I don’t like safety warnings attached to my snacks.
I ate a crappy puffball and took an obligatory Instagram boomerang. It was uneventful. I probably ended up eating four cereal balls, and I popped the last one in my mouth too fast and burned the roof of my mouth. It basically ruined the remainder of my mall trip, because I was panicking that I had frostbite on the roof of my mouth and would never regain feeling ever again.
I don’t know if you know this, but I can be really ridiculous. I didn’t calm down until my sister told me she burned her mouth too. I don’t know why that calmed me down, but it was nice to know we were in it together.
For those unfamiliar with what this crap looks like, here you go:
If my story doesn’t convince you that this crap sucks, maybe this will. The NY Post is straight up calling it a “deadly trend.”
According to Suffolk County Commissioner of Health Services James Tomarken: “If an item infused with liquid nitrogen is prepared or consumed incorrectly, it could have harmful health consequences. Liquid nitrogen can cause damage to a person’s skin and internal organs and, if inhaled, it can cause asphyxiation (lack of oxygen).”
The memo sent to the New York State Department of Health stated:
There is potential for injury associated with the use or service of liquid nitrogen, so we advise that precautions be taken when preparing or eating liquid nitrogen puffs. Instances of frostbite and tissue damage have been reported when residual liquid nitrogen is left in the serving cup. If fingers are used to remove the product from the cup, skin contact with liquid nitrogen can cause frostbite. Ingestion of liquid nitrogen can cause severe damage to the mouth, esophagus, and stomach. Preparing the puffs in a manner that removes residual liquid nitrogen prior to serving effectively reduces the potential for injury.”
Basically, this stuff can burn your esophagus and THEN some. It’s just not worth it. Trust me kids. I tried it. It doesn’t even taste good. And it’s overpriced. And it can literally damage your tissues.
DON’T. Stick to things that won’t damage your internal organs.
