You’re going to have to reach WAYYYYY back into your memory for this one.
Remember the story of the woman who had her Planet Fitness membership revoked after being shocked to find a legit dude walk into the women’s locker room at Planet Fitness while she was changing? The man who walked in was actually a trans-woman, which as you know, is still an Actual Man.
Still, Cormier wasn’t aware of that said something, thereby violating they gym’s “no judgment” policy. However, Planet Fitness tried to say that her membership was terminated for OTHER reasons.
“Planet Fitness is committed to creating a non-intimidating, welcoming environment for our members. Our gender identity non-discrimination policy states that members and guests may use all gym facilities based on their sincere self-reported gender identity. The membership of the member in question was not canceled as a result of complaints about the policy, as we welcome all feedback from our members. Rather, the manner in which she expressed her concerns about the policy exhibited behavior that club management deemed inappropriate and disruptive to other members, which is a violation of the membership agreement and as a result her membership was canceled.”
ANYWAY. This is Carlotta Sklodowska, the trans-woman who walked into the locker room. Even he/she/zir/em/per/whatever admitted that he looks like a man and understood why Cormier freaked out.
“It’s obvious, even from the back,” Sklodowska said.
Oh. And he wasn’t even a member at the gym. He was using his friend’s pass.
It’s all so dumb. I’m not about that locker room life (I was the girl who waited for an available stall), but if a trans-woman who LOOKED LIKE A MAN walked into the locker room while I was changing, I would have freaked out too.
That brings us to today. Queerty wants you to know that hate is winning. Why? Because an appeals court ruled in Cormier’s favor.
Cormier sued for $25,000, citing violation of privacy, severe emotional distress, and damage to her reputation. She lost in both a Michigan lower court and a state court. Then in April, the Michigan Supreme Court agreed to take a look at the case. This week, it determined that Planet Fitness did, in fact, violate its contract with Cormier.
Citing a state law about “failing to reveal a material fact” in an attempt to “mislead or deceive the consumer,” the Michigan Supreme Court declared that by allowing “men who self-identify as women” (say what?!) access to the women’s locker room, Planet Fitness had misrepresented its promise to Cormier that it would provide private women’s locker rooms.
“Plaintiff’s actions indicate that she strongly preferred a locker room and a restroom in which individuals who are assigned biologically male are not present,” the court rules, “and it is thus reasonable to infer that defendants’ failure to inform plaintiff of the unwritten policy affected her decision to join the gym.”
Queerty’s entire take is ridiculous. This has nothing to do with “hate.”

Correct headline – Consent Wins: Court supports right of women to change clothes without men observing them.

No.
Consent wins.
The woman was not informed physical males could enter the women's locker room. There is no hate involved. Reducing women's safety amd privacy to 'hate' in this one context is absurd and offensive.
The court ruled the company has a responsibility to inform. https://t.co/WdsMa4LgWd

She didn’t want to get changed with males. Seems fair enough to me. If they were mixed sex changing rooms this should have been made clear to women.

It’s not hate nor transphobic for a woman to not want a naked biological man in a women’s only changing room. It’s disturbing that there are creeps who think women should be forced to deal with sharing their private space with men.

That’s all it comes down to. Women generally don’t want biological men walking in on them while they’re changing at the gym. That’s not “hateful.” It’s NORMAL.
