July 25, 2018Reports of a “mass shooting” in Toronto erupted Monday night. A gunman shot into restaurants in the Greektown neighborhood, killing two and injuring 13 others. The two who died? A 10-year-old girl and 18-year-old woman.
Devastating.
The shooter was ultimately killed in a gunfire exchange with police and was identified as 29-year-old Faisal Hussain. His family released a statement and said he had been “struggling with psychosis and depression his entire life.”

Either that ORRRRRRRRR he was committed to a radical ideology. Speaking of, ISIS is taking responsibility for the attack. It said Hussain was “a soldier of the Islamic State and carried out the attack in response to calls to target the citizens of the coalition countries.”
It’s not particularly odd for ISIS to take responsibility for the attack without providing evidence. It claims responsibility for whatever it can. However, there is evidence that Hussain was interested in ISIS. There was this nugget in CBS News’ report:
But a law enforcement source told CBS News that Faisal Hussain visited Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) websites and may have expressed support for the terrorist group. They were looking into whether Hussain may have lived at one time in Afghanistan and possibly Pakistan, the source said. There is no indication that Hussain was directed by ISIS to carry out the attack.
Wait. Is it only ~technically~ an ISIS attack if an ISIS commander gives the individual specific instructions? I don’t think that’s how it works. If he was interested in ISIS and actively supported the group, it leaves no doubt in my mind what motivated him to commit such a heinous crime.
