During the controversial press conference in Helsinki, Putin gave Trump a ball.
“President Trump has just mentioned that we’ve successfully concluded the world football cup,” Putin said. “Speaking of football, actually, Mr. President, I will give this ball to you and now the ball is in your court. All the more the United States will host the World Cup in 2026.”
Trump thanked Putin, gave the ball to Melania and said it would go to their son, Barron.
“Thank you very much,” Trump said. “We do host it and we hope we do as good a job. That’s very nice.”
“That will go to my son, Barron…. Melania, here you go,” he added.

Nice! But also, I hope Secret Service checks that thing over, because I don’t trust Putin for a hot minute. Neither does TMZ.
The Secret Service better seriously check that soccer ball Vladimir Putin gave Donald Trump at their summit, because security experts tell us there’s a simple way of putting a bugging device inside that is difficult to detect.
According to TMZ, there are “thin devices that can be stitched inside the ball with a power source that could last around 1 month or longer.” They also said that these bugs can be nonmetallic, which are harder to detect.
Obviously, there would be cause to thoroughly scan the ball for any signal, but in Trump’s world he’s been extremely trusting of the Russians … even inviting Russian media into the Oval.
It’s important to note Trump treasures sports memorabilia — his office in Trump Tower is littered with balls, bats, golf clubs, football helmets and a lot more he’s collected from pro athletes over the years. Barron lives with his parents in the residence quarter of The White House. So, if the ball is out in the open …
Trump’s schmoozy behavior is all part of his deal-making process. Don’t mistake that with naivety (naiveté?). He’s not stupid. He knows Putin can’t be trusted, and I’m SURE Secret Service thoroughly checked that soccer ball. There’s no way they didn’t.
…right?
