President Trump has floated the idea of a “Space Force” before. Remember what he said at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar back in March?
“My new national strategy for space recognizes that space is a war-fighting domain, just like the land, air, and sea. We may even have a space force, develop another one: Space Force.” Trump said.
“We have the Air Force; we’ll have the Space Force. We have the Army, the Navy,” he continued. “You know, I was saying it the other day, because we’re doing a tremendous amount of work in space, I said maybe we need a new force, we’ll call it the ‘Space Force.’ And I was not really serious, and then I said, ‘What a great idea maybe, we’ll have to do that, that could happen.’”
“I was not really serious, but now I’m thinking that’s a great idea. We’re making a Space Force,” he added. “Tremendous.”
I’ll say. I mean, he sounds pretty serious about it. In fact, he just spoke at the National Space Council meeting and made a pretty big announcement.
“I’m directing the Department of Defense and Pentagon to immediately begin the process necessary to establish a Space Force as the sixth branch of the armed forces. That’s a big statement,” Trump said.
