I’m not aware of any statute that would prevent a POTUS from announcing the jobs #s himself if he wanted to. But it’s obviously pretty bad practice to hint at the number. Market participants rely on consistent, predictable release of our data.

To @Austan_Goolsbee‘s assertion on @SquawkCNBC, I think he’s not quite right. What’s illegal is TRADING on the information — depending on how you acquired it. It’s not classified information, but it is market sensitive. What you do with it determines the crime.
