According to recent reports, the Trump administration is expected to propose cutting Planned Parenthood’s federal funding.
The proposed rule change in Title X, a $260 million federal program for contraception and “family planning,” will interpret the 1970 law as requiring absolute separation between contraception and abortion activities, effectively making Planned Parenthood ineligible.
“The proposal would require a bright line of physical as well as financial separation between Title X programs and any program (or facility) where abortion is performed, supported, or referred for as a method of family planning,” a Trump administration official said in an email to the Weekly Standard.
The law says that “None of the funds appropriated under this title shall be used in programs where abortion is a method of family planning.”
And as you know, Planned Parenthood is allllllllll about using abortion as a means of birth control.
Keep in mind that this proposal won’t totally defund Planned Parenthood, but I guess it’s better than nothing.
“This proposal does not necessarily defund Planned Parenthood, as long as they’re willing to disentangle taxpayer funds from abortion as a method of family planning, which is required by the Title X law,” a Trump official stated. “Any grantees that perform, support, or refer for abortion have a choice – disentangle themselves from abortion or fund their activities with privately raised funds.”
Oooooook…but how exactly would Planned Parenthood “disentangle” itself from abortion. After all, fungibility is still A Thing. In addition, this proposal wouldn’t affect Medicaid providing money to the organization, which is problematic.
According to the 2015-2016 report, Planned Parenthood received $554 million from US taxpayers but had a revenue of $1.354 billion. It performed 328,348 abortions that year as well. It made over $77 million in profit.
It’s time to COMPLETELY defund this heinous organization. If it’s really THAT needed, it’ll compete with other community health clinics and thrive. If it’s not, it will fail.
Let the free market determine Planned Parenthood’s fate. Why are liberals so fearful of that? Because people would realize it’s not needed after all.
