April 16, 2018According to recent reports, 7 inmates are dead and at least 17 more are injured after some sort of huge fight broke out at a maximum security prison in South Carolina.
No officers were injured, so that’s a good thing.
Prisons spokesman Jeff Taillon announced the grim outcome after State Law Enforcement Division agents helped secure Lee Correctional Institution around 3 a.m. Monday.
Taillon said no officers were wounded after multiple inmate fights broke out at 7:15 p.m. Sunday. He said 17 of the injured required medical attention outside the prison.

Lee Correctional Institution was secured at 2:55 AM following an incident which started at 7:15 PM. The incident involved multiple inmate on inmate altercations in three housing units.

According to the AP, the maximum security prison in Bishopville houses “about 1,500 inmates, some of South Carolina’s most violent and longest-serving offenders.”
It should be noted: The prison doesn’t have the best track record when it comes to violence.
The riot on Sunday comes less than a month after an officer was briefly held hostage by inmates at the prison, who took control of a dorm for about 30 minutes. Another inmate was killed in February, following another inmate death last July.
Two officers were stabbed in a 2015 fight, and five were injured in a December 2007 attack by three inmates.
The State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is assisting prison officials with the investigation.
This clearly calls for a full scale investigation. Was it a coordinated effort? Only time will tell.
