I watched Fox News last night as the strikes in Syria quickly unfolded. Afterward, Laura Ingraham had a panel react, and things got super heated. No– not necessarily between panel members, but Sebastian Gorka and Laura Ingraham herself.
It was a really interesting exchange, because it truly reflected the current divide among conservative Trump supporters.
Gorka, who is a former White House national security aide, fully supported President Trump’s decision.
“To anybody who has doubts, think about this one question,” Gorka said. “What happens when the outside regime uses chemical weapons, as secretary Mattis said, and as he did last year, and I saw the intelligence, and we do nothing? What message does that send to Iran, to Assad, to proxies? Because it sends a clear message as far as I’m concerned, that we got away with it and we can do it again.”
It all goes back to enforcing Obama’s red line.
Ingraham questioned his reasoning. She basically said there are plenty of reasons we shouldn’t have engaged– the biggest being the US debt. She wondered why no one else is stepping up, which is kind of self-explanatory. Gorka argued that this is about the United States reestablishing its role as a leader and force for good in the world.
“..without American leadership, there is no action,” Gorka said.
Bingo.
“Yeah, we’re out of money. We have no dough. It’s not 1995 anymore, Sebastian,” Ingraham said.
Gorka responded, “So, we let children get gassed.”
It’s a difficult situation. Ingraham kind of implied that it’s irresponsible of the Trump administration to spend money and resources on this and eventually said that she’s simply playing the Devil’s advocate (which I don’t believe. She believes what she’s saying).
She’s afraid the American people will hate this move and elect someone like Elizabeth Warren. Her words, not mine.
There’s no easy answer here. This entire conversation is emblematic of the current tension among Trump supporters.
Where do you fall? #TeamGorka or #TeamIngraham?
