Not The Onion: Syria’s Chairing A UN Disarmament Forum On Chemical Weapons

The rebel-held town of Douma is dealing with the aftermath of another chemical attack. The United States is still deciding how to respond. Defense Secretary James Mattis said he’s not taking anything off the table.

President Trump just held a Cabinet meeting and echoed the same sentiment.

While the United States continues to craft a response, the UN continues to be a complete JOKE.

As it turns out, Syria’s set to chair a UN disarmament forum next month. Yes, really. When we say the UN is a joke and utterly useless, this is EXACTLY what we’re talking about.

A UN disarmament forum on chemical weapons is to be chaired by Syria next month – despite Bashar al-Assad’s regime being blamed for another toxic gas outrage.

The 65-nation Conference on Disarmament, based in Geneva, negotiated the international treaty banning the use of poison gas around the world and reports to the UN General Assembly.

But there have been calls for the US, the EU and UN chief Antonio Guterres to protest and for ambassadors to stage a conference walk out during the upcoming four weeks of the Syrian presidency.

Is this not the dumbest thing you’ve ever heard in your entire life?

Hillel Neuer, executive director of the Geneva based non-governmental organisation, United Nations Watch, said: ‘Having the Syrian regime of Bashar al-Assad preside over global chemical and nuclear weapons disarmament will be like putting a serial rapist in charge of a women’s shelter.’

That’s EXACTLY what it’s like.

While the conference is not formally a United Nations organisation, it is linked to it through a personal representative of the UN Secretary-General.

Established in 1979 it reports to the UN General Assembly and is billed by the UN as ‘the single multilateral disarmament negotiating forum of the international community.’

Syria will assume the presidency of the Conference on Disarmament on May 28 and hold it over four weeks, until June 24, according to UN Watch.

Meanwhile, Assad’s regime continues to use chemical weapons against its own people.
