Making TV Great Again? ‘Roseanne’ Pulls In Stellar Ratings Again

The third episode of “Roseanne” aired last night. I engaged in a mini binge and watched the first two episodes beforehand. I loved it so much that I’ve decided to slowly watch all the original “Roseanne” episodes in my spare time. Where has this show BEEN all my life? (The first episode aired years before I was even born, so that probably explains it.)

I love it. So far, so good. I’m not looking for a political or “conservative” show. It’s just nice to see another side represented once in a while. Keep in mind– I’m not saying the Roseanne’s character represents conservatives or conservatism, but her jokes, self-deprecating humor, common sense and say-it-like-it-is style…that resonates with us. Those are, without a doubt, conservative attributes. We like to laugh.

If you recall Mockarena recently wrote about how one executive producer said the remainder of the show’s episodes would piss off conservatives. I think her exact words were, “We keep saying that the first episode is going to piss off liberals and the other eight are going to piss off conservatives.”

So I tuned in. I wanted to see if they could piss me off.

They didn’t. In fact, I loved the episode. I thought it was hilarious. It really centered around Darlene’s daughter being an entitled little brat. Darlene and Roseanne clash over parenting styles, so you see a little bit of the “old-style” parenting vs. “modern parenting” debate rage on.

The old style is where it’s at. (Apologies to my future children. HA– jk. I’m not sorry.)

At one point in the episode, Roseanne confronts Harris about her laundry machine hogging habits, and Harris gets super mouthy. She’s incredibly disrespectful and ultimately calls Roseanne an old, stupid hillbilly. I’m wondering if that’s what liberals thought would offend us. Hillbilly jokes. ‘Cause you know. Conservatives are all unrefined toothless rubes and stuff. If that’s what they thought we’d be offended by, I’m sorry to disappoint. They’ll have to try harder than that. We aren’t snowflakes. And Roseanne had a LEGENDARY response. Best scene of the show. Hands down.

DYING.

So yeah– I don’t see why liberals would think we’d be offended by anything in that episode. The hillbilly insult? YAWN. We call each other hillbillies half of the time. They’re going to have to try harder than that.

ANYWAY. Last night’s ratings are in, and while it wasn’t as huge as the premiere (which was expected), it still DOMINATED. We’re talking 15.2 million viewers.

Roseanne is on a roll. The ABC sitcom, naturally stumbling a bit after its boffo premiere, still managed a remarkable showing in week No. 2 — topping all other scripted telecasts of the night and, in all likelihood, the week.

ABC’s half-hour episode of the revived sitcom averaged a 3.9 rating among adults 18-49 and 15.2 million viewers. Compared with the live showing of the one-hour premiere a week ago, the audience dropped by 17 percent. Among adults 18-49, the second week marks a steeper 24 percent drop

The comedy was bound to have at least a few viewers bolting after the premiere. Openers of any kind generally set a high bar, and the curiosity around the reunion was noticeably significant. Three days of time-shifting have already seen the Mar. 27 episode soar to 25 million viewers and a 7.3 rating in the key demo. The only scripted broadcast series with those kinds of numbers in recent memory is the post-Super Bowl episode of This Is Us.

I don’t know about you, but I’ll be tuning in next week for sure. I want to see if that executive producer just made that remark to turn conservatives down a few notches. We’ll see!
