March 14, 2018Students are planning nationwide walkouts today. It’s just what it sounds like. They’re going to stand up, leave class and walk in a specific, designated area of the school (I’m assuming, I’m sure it varies from school to school) to protest gun violence.
I’m just going to say it. I think it’s absolutely absurd. I understand that schools feel pressure to allow students to do something, but it doesn’t change the fact that it’s completely misguided. This is really a veiled protest against guns. The root of this protest is anti-Second Amendment. That’s all there is to it.
Students planned to mark National Walkout Day by leaving their classrooms at 10 a.m. local times for 17 minutes to show solidarity for the 17 killed in the Valentine’s Day attack at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and to make a nationwide appeal for changes in gun legislation.
Students at more than 2,800 schools and colleges have signed up to participate, according to Women’s March Youth EMPOWER, which is helping students coordinate the events.
Organizers are urging students at all schools, from elementary schools to universities, to take part. Even parents, teachers and others are encouraged to walk out of their jobs at 10 a.m.

I find this part particularly amusing.
“This walk is our way of showing our students we support them and believe in keeping them safe,” said Brown, an English and special education teacher at Haddonfield Memorial High School.
Wow thanks! Your commitment to marching around in circles with them will REALLY make them safe! I’m sorry– make them feel safe. It won’t actually make them more safe. But at least they know teachers can march really good!
I’m sorry if this sounds heartless, but I’ve had it with these pointless protests. They do nothing. NONE of us like gun violence. Let’s get that straight. What they’re marching for– greater gun control laws and stupid bans on “scary” looking guns– will NOT make kids more safe in school. This entire movement is utterly pointless.

This will look different at every participating school. I know some schools sent out permission slips to parents. In those cases, if they’re signed, the school will allow the students to get up and walk around and march in the gym. But others are straight up marching right out of their schools and over to the White House to protest guns.
