The city of Dallas is turning its back on the NRA.
Dallas’ Mayor Pro Tem Dwaine R. Caraway is telling the NRA to take their convention elsewhere this year, unless they do more to ban AR-15s.
Love it when Democrats virtue signal about “showing leadership.”
Alright leader… What’s your plan? Seriously… what are you thinking?
Will you send your police force into private homes to confiscate AR-15s? Are you doing a turn in program?
How well do you think that will work ? You know who definitely WON’T turn their guns in? ….the people you should worry about.
Dallas’s Mayor Pro Tem has asked the NRA not to host its annual convention in his city this year unless its leaders do more to end gun violence in wake of the Florida school shooting.
Dwaine R. Caraway, who works under Mayor Mike Rawlings, made the unexpected comments at a press conference on Monday.
He implored the association to ‘step up to the plate’ to ban assault rifles and semi-automatics like the AR-15 used by gunman Nikolas Cruz, and said it was time they ‘step up to the plate’ and lead the conversation about safer gun laws.
‘It is a tough call when you ask the NRA to reconsider coming to Dallas, but it is putting all citizens first, and getting them to come to the table and elected officials to come to the table and to address this madness now.
Honestly… the NRA convention brings in HUGE sums of money for local businesses. I think they SHOULD go somewhere else… somewhere they’re welcome… and watch this idiot reap the consequences of losing MILLIONS of dollars for his city.
Caraway, who is a Democrat, said it was time for the NRA to ‘end the madness’ now before more children are shot.
Dallas is a standalone blue city in the sea of Republican districts in the center and north of the state. The state is largely pro-2nd amendment and has the 18th highest gun ownership per capita in the country.
Texas only has the 18th highest gun ownership per capita in the country? Really? I would have expected it to be higher than that.
Caraway, 65, insisted on Monday that he was pro-arms but said it was time to make changes current laws.
‘I own five guns. I have one in every room of my house and one in my car.
‘I am all for the protection of the 2nd Amendment, but I am also for protecting the children and a safer Dallas.
‘Who needs an AR-15 to go hunting? Who needs an AR-15 to protect their house? They talk about mental illness. Yes, mental illness is an issue, but it’s not just an issue that should only be associated with guns.
‘At the end of the day, we need to connect the dots.
‘The NRA needs to step up to the plate and show leadership. Elected officials are receiving dollars from the NRA, and they’re afraid to set policy and to set necessary gun rules,’ he said.
Spoken like someone who has no idea what the Second Amendment is there for.The Second Amendment isn’t about hunting. It never has been.
The NRA is just shrugging it off, though.
His comments, however confronting, fell on deaf ears.
NRA spokesman Andrew Arulanandam said it was not Caraway’s right to keep the association or its members out of the city.
‘No politician anywhere can tell the NRA not to come to their city.
‘We are already there. Dallas, like every American city and community, is populated by NRA members.
‘Our members work in fire stations and police departments.
Absolutely true. NRA members are EVERYWHERE… but I think they should slap this guy around a little bit and pull out of Dallas. The lost revenue alone would be enough to make this d-bag’s head spin.
What do you think?
