WSJ reporter and Seoul Bureau Chief, Jonathan Cheng tweeted (then deleted) a completely unverified report that NSC Asia director Matthew Pottinger said the US would conduct a military strike on North Korea to help with midterm elections.
A “bloody nose” he called it….

YIKES.
That’s a pretty big charge…
An impending act of war done to help boost an election? Probably not something you should “report” on unless you’ve substantiated the report, right?
Weeeellll…. looks like he maybe sort of kind of forgot to do that…
A number of people were immediately shocked by the accusation:
Matt Pottinger would never say that. Totally ridiculous. https://t.co/3RGpgSYYVj

Victor is a Georgetown Prof+CSIS in DC. Author/former USG official.
No link, no name of reporting outlet, and my (admittedly speedy) search turns up nothing in English-language media (other than references to this) https://t.co/jSMTnUL0xo

Olivier is the Chief Washington Correspondent for Yahoo! News.
I’m very doubtful that Matt Pottinger would say this. It would be out of character. He’s not political. https://t.co/ZXpSB0tGDI

Due calls herself a “Former government drone, now in think tankery (CSIS).”
And then Sarah came in for the K.O.
Never happened. Pottinger is a Marine who served in two wars and doesn’t take military action lightly. Can’t believe @WSJ reporter didn’t reach out for a comment before repeating such a reckless accusation. https://t.co/B270jlqHUs
— Sarah Sanders (@PressSec) February 3, 2018
Reckless is an understatement.
Jonathan then deleted his tweet, and followed up with this:
It was a mistake to tweet the report from Hankyoreh about comments purportedly made by the NSC’s Matt Pottinger without verification, and I’ve deleted it. The NSC has denied the report, calling it an “unsourced, unbylined, untrue accusation.” pic.twitter.com/AcYliD1zoB

At least he’s acknowledged his mistake.
TOO LATE:
A lot of news today, but this is the most disturbing. We need to know:
-Did NSC official Mathew Pottinger make the below statement?
-If so, what was the response?
-Who else was in the meeting?
-Does @realDonaldTrump believe war in North Korea would help in midterm elections? https://t.co/Ra5m8vYfO6— Ted Lieu (@tedlieu) February 3, 2018
Ted Lieu is such an insufferable little droolstain.
THIS IS TRULY HORRIFIC.
If true, Matthew Pottinger must be fired immediately, and Congress must put serious constraints on @realDonaldTrump‘s ability to launch any attack against North Korea (or any target for that matter).

I think this MF is getting ready to create a “false flag event”… to implement his “bloody nose” strategy before 2018 election… I 🙏🏼 I am wrong…

Trump as a true “patriot” — don’t think so. He’s a pander bear who makes phony patriotic appeals to true patriots for self-serving ends. He does nothing that doesn’t enhance him, his family or their businesses.

Tell them they’re spreading lies… well, they’ll call you a Russian bot.
None of this is true!! Never happened!

And how is the weather in the good ol’ USSR, comrade? pic.twitter.com/x1zKdNiSuG

Good job calling out the bots!

Typical leftist bullcrap. They don’t care about the truth. They care about hating Trump.
