First, a quick rundown. Corrine Brown is the former Democratic congresswoman who raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for a sham charity and used it for personal expenses. She was found guilty of 18 of 22 charges in her federal fraud trial. The charity was supposed to give poor students scholarships, but in reality, it was just one giant slush fund.
Her sentencing hearing was last month. Her attorney, James Smith, wrote in a memo that Brown shouldn’t go to prison, because she’s actually a good, sweet person who has done so much good for the community. You know. Besides using their scholarship money for herself. James also mentioned that Brown has like, 102 diagnoses, including recent memory loss. Brown– someone who would still be serving in Congress if she could– has apparently been experiencing “memory loss.” Let that sink in.
Also, her supporters think this is about racism.
