Last month, GQ Magazine honored Colin Kaepernick by naming him “Citizen of the Year.”
Yep. That’s what acting like an ungrateful snob will get you these days. Praise from ultra-lib magazine editors. Speaking of, Kaepernick is actually getting another award. He’s receiving the 2017 Sports Illustrated Muhammad Ali Legacy Award. Apparently, Kaepernick “embodies the ideals of sportsmanship, leadership and philanthropy and has used sports as a platform for changing the world.”
Sports Illustrated’s first sentence drives me up the wall.
Colin Kaepernick made his truth known when he first decided not to stand for the national anthem.
Um, no. There is no such thing as your own truth. Kaepernick isn’t entitled to his “own truth.” There’s just truth. He can reject it and twist it into a version of something that better fits his social justice narrative, but that doesn’t make it truth.
SI truly views him as a hero. Get a load of this.
He had a lot of football left to play and a lot more money to make when he made his decision. It was late August, 2016. People who were anonymous in life had become famous in death. Philando Castile. Eric Garner. Alton Sterling. Freddie Gray. They were tragic symbols of a society that had taken a terribly wrong turn. As the anthem played ahead of the 49ers’ preseason game against the Texans, Kaepernick, San Francisco’s 28-year-old quarterback at the time, quietly took a seat on the bench.
Unbelievable.
In the last 16 months, Kaepernick’s truth has been twisted, distorted and used for political gain.
He’s been twisted and distorted for political gain? Did he or did he not wear cops are pigs socks? Did he or did he not praise Fidel Castro? HE BROUGHT THAT UPON HIMSELF.
It has cost him at least a year of his NFL career and the income that should have come with it.
As you can see, SI really respects Kaepernick. He sacrificed money. He’s so selfless. Unlike you, hater.
But still, it is his truth. He has not wavered from it. He does not regret speaking it. He has caused millions of people to examine it. And, quietly, he has donated nearly a million dollars to support it.
OMG YOU CANNOT HAVE YOUR OWN TRUTH.
For all those reasons—for his steadfastness in the fight for social justice, for his adherence to his beliefs no matter the cost—Colin Kaepernick is the recipient of the 2017 Sports Illustrated Muhammad Ali Legacy Award.
I think I’m going to hurl.
Congrats, SI. Thanks for reminding everyone how disconnected you are from reality.
