ESPN Is Laying Off 150 Employees Today

This is what swirling down the big porcelain bowl looks like.

Today, ESPN is informing 150 employees that they no longer have jobs.

ESPN President John Skipper wrote:

Today we are informing approximately 150 people at ESPN that their jobs are being eliminated.

We appreciate their contributions, and will assist them as much as possible in this difficult moment with severance, a 2017 bonus, the continuation of health benefits and outplacement services. They will also appreciate your support.

The majority of the jobs eliminated are in studio production, digital content, and technology and they generally reflect decisions to do less in certain instances and re-direct resources.

We will continue to invest in ways which will best position us to serve the modern sports fan and support the success of our business.

Keep in mind, this is in addition to the mass layoffs that took place within the organization in April.

According to insiders, the layoffs seem to revolve around behind-the-scenes workers– not really on-air personalities.

One update on ESPN layoffs: Hearing the job losses for this round will be concentrated on behind-the-scenes people/positions in multiple depts. Not many front-facing (on-air) names expected, if any. Having been through too many at Time Inc, it all sucks.
