The New York Times has written a piece entitled “His Eye Makeup Is Way Better Than Yours”
How teenage boys (and younger) wearing makeup are affecting beauty norms https://t.co/F8je5M2ozU
— The New York Times (@nytimes) November 25, 2017
In it, they highlight young boys who are now considered social media “beauty gurus.”
Of course, this is oh so wonderful.
Why do we have beauty norms in the first place? It is empowering to see someone so young breaking that mold, and yet so sad that the mold had to be broken.

#Freedom to decide.
— Shanonn (@shanonnok) November 25, 2017
To decide what, exactly?
I want them to be free of social constructs that force them to deny doing something they enjoy like wearing make up. Or maybe putting make up on, which would be painting art using the face as a convase.

So why are these little boys wearing makeup? Because of their parents. That’s why. Even the people who are stoked about this will readily admit it.
“What you have now are millennial moms who have grown up in an era where gender is more fluid,” [salon owner Cozy] Friedman said. “Millennials are very in tune with empowering their children.” For example, she sees a wide range of hair lengths on boys. “It’s not unusual for boys to sit in the chair, take out an iPhone and show a picture of what they want their hair to look like,” she said, adding that they start around age 6. “There are many role models for them to look to now.”
So…yeeeeah.
This is on the parents.
Some of the people defending this sound like actual lunatics:
In Versailles men regularly wore makeup. We care about this now like it’s new? like it’s new to Western Culture?
— Mamasaurus (@RawrNeedsCoffee) November 25, 2017
People are just ignorant of history
— Avalon (@xFaeryPrincessx) November 25, 2017
History has nothing to do with boys wearing makeup in THIS century. U wanna live in the past? Fine. The rest of us will go on living reality
— NaLo Walls (@NaLo_Walls) November 25, 2017
Do these people need a brief recap of all the stuff that happened “In Versailles” that don’t happen in the modern age?
This is stupid to the point of being silly.
But while some are all about this, the majority of Twitter responses didn’t think this was an ideal situation…. for a number of reasons.
Children wearing make up? Why sexualize young children let them be kids
— Francine (@Francin_P) November 25, 2017
True. Everyone is saying young girls wear makeup so boys should be allowed to as well…
Only I think there’s something icky about 10 year old girls wearing tons of makeup and getting “YouTube famous” too.

Sorry not sorry my son is not leaving the house wearing makeup even if he applies it better then me. If I had s daughter I would not let her out of the house with that much makeup on either.

There is something wrong with a once serious news org now promoting the transgender agenda. This is a farce trying to normalize fake ‘gender fluidity’ to introduce AI – robots do not have gender.
— Jennifer Hoffman (@Jenniferhoffman) November 25, 2017
I lost her on the second half of this.
Pretty Baby comes to mind.
Taxi Driver too. Also, The Dancing Boys of Afghanistan.Hollywood feminists, how many of you would be celebrating this if it were a little girl? Speak up.
— Red Dawn Hollywood (@RedDawnHolly) November 25, 2017
It seems the NYT agenda is to sexualize children to grow up to become infantilized adults…No, this is not the norm and God help us if it ever becomes the norm.
— Christy Waters (@ThatChristyChic) November 25, 2017
Kids should not be wearing makeup, regardless of what sex they are.
— myblackfriendsays (@myblackfriend) November 25, 2017
Enter this blowhard…
True; makeup is sin. As is poetry, soft cheese, and all things sold from the ‘orient’.
— seanR (@seanrichardryan) November 25, 2017
Good grief.
Everybody different, brother. Some like soft cheese, some hard. N u like ur young boys w make-up while others want em to be just kids……
— Jake Stone (@jakestone02) November 25, 2017
HAHA!
Natural beauty is what we should teach our kids. No one needs makeup to be beautiful Do you think he may be too young? Regardless of sex.
— Carole DeLorenzi (@DelorenziCarole) November 25, 2017
And here’s a TOTALLY DIFFERENT reason one person sees this as problematic:
Makeup itself has a toxicity that may cause health problems.
Consider children’s developing brains & glands.
There are simple & un-opinionated reasons for children to not wear makeup.
Every child may want to copy adults.
For balanced human
chemical well-being
should they?

I think this opinion best expresses what I think of this whole thing:
I find this wrong on so many levels. This is a child. This isn’t a case of creativity and self expression. This is a child being thrust into an adult world with little to no actual understanding or maturity. Parents are failing at parenting.
