Charlotte Air Traffic Controller Arrested For Allegedly Having A ‘Weapon Of Mass Destruction’

This is incredibly chilling.

An air traffic controller at Charlotte Douglas International Airport was arrested Friday for allegedly possessing a weapon of mass destruction. The weapon was NOT at the airport. Initial reports indicate that he had the materials to make a “pipe bomb-like device” at his home.

Paul George Dandan, 30, of Charlotte was jailed on $45,000 bail. It was not immediately clear what the alleged weapon was.

He also faces two counts of weapon offense, records show.

The FAA said it has terminated the employee’s access to the facility and is cooperating with law enforcement authorities.

Law enforcement sources confirmed to Observer news partner WBTV that the FBI is involved in the investigation. The FBI doesn’t anticipate federal charges being filed against Dandan, WCNC-TV reported.

But there’s more to the story.

According to WSOCTV, Dandan’s roommate, Derrick Fells, made the device “in order to use it against a neighbor during their ongoing dispute.” Because THAT’S sane and rational. (Almost as sane as allegedly tackling your neighbor over flora.) According to reports, Fells had a change of heart at the last minute and gave the device to Dandan, because hey! What are roommates for?

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department officers responded to 315 Minitree Lane near Mount Holly Road after someone called 911 about someone who was in possession of a homemade explosive device.

Members of the CMPD Bomb Squad also responded and confirmed that it was a homemade pipe bomb.

“The FAA employee only had access to the offsite air traffic control tower and had no access to the restricted areas of the terminal or ramp,” airport officials said in a news release. “He did not have access to any aircraft at the Airport.”

Detectives on Friday obtained warrants for both men and they were arrested.

Dandon was charged with possession of a weapon of mass destruction, acquiring a weapon of mass destruction and transporting a weapon of mass destruction.

Fells was charged with three counts of manufacturing a weapon of mass destruction and one count of possession of a weapon of mass destruction.

“The FAA has terminated the employee’s access to the facility and is cooperating with law enforcement authorities,” FAA officials said in a news release.
