I have the utmost respect for our law enforcement officers.
That doesn’t mean I don’t realize they’re not all perfect. In fact, I definitely think there’s some bad apples in there.
I find this absolutely appalling:
Many are saying she had it coming because she slapped his head.
I don’t agree with that. She was obviously incoherently drunk, the officers were carrying her up in the air, and she was aggressive.
I think that’s reprehensible behavior on her part…. but I don’t think she deserved to be cold-cocked. That can REALLY injure someone, and I didn’t think the officer was in any sort of imminent danger from this unruly drunkard.
I know someone who was punched in the face by a stranger. Obviously this is a very different situation, but the blow broke her eye socket, and caused really significant damage… so I may be sensitive to videos of women getting punched in the face.
The Miami-Dade police department is investigating a shocking video that shows the moment an officer sucker punched an unruly fan during a University of Miami football game on Saturday night.
The 14-second video was first shared by Barstool UMiami, and appears to show four male police officers pick up a woman in a UM t-shirt.
The woman, identified as 30-year-old Bridget Freitas, misses when she first tries to hit the officer holding her right leg, then lands a slap on his face during her second swing.
Almost immediately the officer pulls back his arm and punches Freitas in the face.
The incident happened during the University of Miami’s victory over Virginia Tech at the Hard Rock stadium on Saturday night.
The department posted a statement on its Twitter to address the incident, saying: ‘Promoting a safe and secure environment during any special event is our primary concern.
‘After responding to a disturbance, the person in the video was being removed form the event by our officers for being disorderly. She was subsequently arrested for Battery on a Law Enforcement Officer and Disorderly Conduct/Breach of the peace.
‘Supervisory personnel are aware of the video and are reviewing the incident to ensure compliance with our policies and procedures.’
The incident was captured by Erica Arguetta, who pulled out his iPhone and started recording when he saw things start to escalate.
He said that before the police officers arrived he saw Freitas attempting to hit another woman, and he said she was ‘making a scandal.’‘She looked like she had no control of herself and she was refusing to leave the stadium,’ the 27-year-old told ABC 10.
‘This is why it took four police officers to get her out.’
I think an officer should have more control over the situation and himself that what we saw here.
What do you think? Was it warranted? Or excessive force?
