October 13, 2017On Thursday, President Trump signed an executive order on health care. The order is expected to “ease rules on small businesses banding together to buy health insurance, through what are known as association health plans, and lift Obama administration limits on short-term health insurance plans.”
Everyone has mixed feelings on this. I still want this taken care of legislatively, but I realize that’s not going to happen anytime soon. This executive order doesn’t fix all of Obamacare’s many, many problems. Only Congress can take care of that.
But wait. There’s more. On Thursday night, the Trump administration announced it would end Obamacare subsidy payments to insurers.

Fox News is describing this as a “major blow to Obamacare.”
President Trump plans to halt payments to insurers under the Affordable Care Act “immediately,” in a major blow to ObamaCare that is likely to draw a legal challenge.
The president, though, used the overnight decision to up pressure on Democrats to negotiate a “fix” to the “imploding” health care law.

The administration is working to quickly implement this change.
The Justice Department took swift action, notifying a federal appeals court in Washington, D.C., in connection with a related lawsuit that an upcoming Oct. 18 payment “will not occur.”
The decision is the latest effort in the president’s bid to ultimately “repeal and replace” what’s considered the signature legislation of his White House predecessor.
Democrats are already pushing back.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi – the top two congressional Democrats – blasted the move, in the latest indication that their political dalliance with the president on immigration and budget issues is over for now.
“Sadly, instead of working to lower health costs for Americans, it seems President Trump will singlehandedly hike Americans’ health premiums,” they said in a written statement. “It is a spiteful act of vast, pointless sabotage leveled at working families and the middle class in every corner of America. Make no mistake about it, Trump will try to blame the Affordable Care Act, but this will fall on his back and he will pay the price for it.”
